About James Earl Lowe, Jr.

Jim Lowe has spent more than four decades in intellectual property law — first inside major corporations, and now serving inventors and businesses directly from his New Berlin practice.

He began his career as an engineer, earning a B.S. in Nuclear Engineering and an M.S. in Industrial Administration from Purdue University before completing his law degree at Indiana University. That combination — hard technical training plus business education — has shaped how he practices ever since.

Jim served as Chief Patent Counsel at A.O. Smith Corporation and later at Joy Global, a worldwide leader in mining and heavy equipment. In those roles he built patent-protection systems, managed global IP portfolios, and advised executives on how intellectual property fit into broader business strategy. Earlier in his career he practiced at Wisconsin firms including Michael Best & Friedrich and Davis & Kuelthau.

Over his career he has prepared and prosecuted thousands of patent applications spanning software, semiconductors, medical devices, mining systems, and much in between, along with trademark and copyright matters for clients ranging from individual inventors to established companies. He has held an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell — the highest peer rating for legal ability and ethics — since 1995.

Today Jim brings that same in-house, business-minded approach to a solo practice, giving each client direct access to a senior attorney who understands both the technology and the strategy behind protecting it.
